Project Background

The Colombian service center is part of a group that supplies steel for bridges, mining infrastructure and heavy structural components. Until recently, most thick material was sourced as plates, which were then flame-cut or plasma-cut into strips. This approach involved high scrap rates, long processing times and limited control of dimensional tolerances. It also made it difficult to respond quickly when project designs changed or when contractors suddenly needed different strip widths.

As heavy-gauge coils became more common in the regional market, the company decided to build its own capability to slit 4–16 mm coils. They wanted to replace a mix of plate processing and outsourced slitting with an in-house heavy-duty line that could handle demanding grades and large coils while maintaining predictable strip geometry.

Key Configuration & Parameters

We delivered a 4–16 mm × 1650 mm heavy-gauge slitting line with a line speed of 50 m/min. The line features heavy-duty arbors, a reinforced frame and high-torque drives specifically designed for thick, high-strength coils in demanding conditions.

Customer Benefits & Feedback

The customer can now slit heavy-gauge coils locally and respond faster to project needs, reducing dependence on imported plates and external processors. For thick material, 50 m/min provides a strong productivity boost while maintaining good strip quality. The customer regards this line as a key step into the heavy-plate service market and a foundation for offering more competitive packages to mining and infrastructure clients.
